Some quotes about Boka Marimba...
"There is nothing that can match the uncontrollable rush of
excitement that sweeps over a crowd when the resonant, pounding
depth of the baritone marimbas joins the leading soprano's melodic
introduction to a traditional song. Bad-mood types and cynics flee
the premises or succumb to the cyclic rhythms."
-Fiona Martin, Willamette Week
"...the group has an African authenticity and sound that belies its Rose City roots."
-Robin Roth. The Oregonian
"We have gathered more compliments from Boka Marimba's performances than any other
group or entertainer that we have scheduled over the years. Their sound and stage
presence is something you will want to experience. I have never witnessed such a
large crowd in the park dancing and having fun than when Boka Marimba performed."

A review of Weaving the Rhythms CD
What can be said about marimba music that has not been said before?
The high-energy sound has been a Pacific Northwest musical phenomenon since the
1960s. Brought to the United States by ethnomusicologist Dumisani Maraire, this
traditional music of Zimbabwe has left audiences dancing in the aisles from the
Model Democratic Convention to the Boo Ball. Portland's own Boka Marimba
has been behind these successes, and their latest CD, Weaving the Rhythms, showcases
the group's ability to get the blood pumping and the feet moving.
The beauty of Boka Marimba's music lies not only in the unique sound of the
marimbas themselves, but also in the complex African polyrhythms. Think of large
wooden xylophones playing deep, fuzzy baritone and lilting soprano
melodies simultaneously, and you'll be on the right track. Combine this sound with
hip-shaking rhythm that leaves Elvis in the dust, and you'll see why dancing
at Boka Marimba concerts isn't the exception, it's the rule. Since 1987, Boka
Marimba has delighted audiences all over the Northwest, and you can finally find
out why on their new live album. Recorded at the Original Music Showcase here
in Portland, Weaving the Rhythms gives us a taste of the infectious marimba energy
in a live arena. You won't be disappointed, and don't be surprised if you find
yourself dancing in front of the stereo.

"Your music is more than just something to dance to - it's an experience of
spiritual significance that can and should be shared by all."
